| Team RadioShack hits the heights as our teams pay their mountain dues |

|
On the day Team RadioShack took their Tour de France challenge into the mountains, elsewhere in the Alps its second string won the team classification in the Tour of Austria.
The Shack won both the final stage team prize and the overall team win in the race, which was eventually won by Riccardo Ricco (Ceramica Flaminia), despite a nasty crash on stage seven following a collision with a motorcycle.
Their top rider overall was Tiago Machado, who narrowly missed out on a podium place after finishing fourth overall, followed by Ben Hermans in ninth place.
Cervélo TestTeam also had a successful time in Austria, with highlights including fourth and fifth place finishes in the final stage – raced in sweltering temperatures – for Roger Hammond and Martin Reimer respectively.
The race was a personal triumph for Cervélo’s young Austrian rider Stefan Denifl, who turned in a credible seventh place finish overall in his home race.
“I have to say ‘chapeau’ to Stefan,” said race director Jens Zemke. “He did a respectful performance for just a 22-year-old.
“All in all I am really satisfied with the Tour of Austria. It was a well done tour and we were always present on the podium with Stefan as the best Austrian rider.”
Being the best of his compatriots has an added advantage for Stefan’s kitchen – each day the best-placed Austrian rider was given a coffee maker and he walked away from the race with a total of four.
Some early Christmas shopping done for his family? Not a bit of it – “they have already seven at home from last year,” he revealed later on Twitter.
Cervélo’s women’s team was also in action in mountains in the last week in the Giro Donne, but although Emma Pooley won the mountains jersey, there was no repeat of last year when a Cervélo rider topped the podium, in the shape of Claudia Hausler. This year the German star had to settle for fourth, with Pooley in fifth.
The race was won by Mara Abbot (US National Team) following final stage, a sprint around Monza, which was won by Abbot’s team-mate Shelley Evans, just ahead of Cervélo’s Kirsten Wild.
“It was the Tour of second places, we took six second spots in all,” said race director Egon Van Kessel.
