| Triathlete Tim’s run of success goes on and Don in Hamburg |
Tim Don got his first view of life from the world championship podium when he picked up a bronze medal in the ITU World Championship Series in Hamburg over the weekend.
Tim came in less than a minute behind winner Javier Gomez after a late burst of speed – made possible by the energy given to him by his ZipVit Sport nutrition – saw him make his way up through the order in the final lap of the run.
The third place, just 34 seconds behind second-placed Jan Frodeno, the new world number one, came hot on the heels of Tim’s win at the Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon Elite Cup in Des Moines last month.
It means he will now go into next Saturday’s ITU event in Hyde Park in good form and good heart, not least because past weeks of intensive training in preparation for London meant that he was not quite at the peak of his powers.
The result of this was that when Gomez and Frodeno took off to battle for the win, Tim held himself back to ensure that he remained fresh for London.
“They had a good start and I realised I was racing for third,” he said. “It’s not the way I like to race but I couldn’t go with them today. I used my speed well and got on the podium.
“This is the first time I’ve finished on the podium in a World Championship Series race so I’m very pleased.
“But London’s the one I really want. I will fly home, rest up and try to enjoy it. I know I’m in great shape.”
Tim has identified 2010 as key to his preparations for the Olympic Games in London in two years time and, as well as his American triumph, has won the Blenheim Triathlon and the British Elite Duathlon Championships this season. He also set a new personal best in this year’s Manchester 10k.

As well as giving him the fuel for his decisive last lap in Hamburg, the energy products proved their worth in Des Moines, when Tim broke from the pack early in the 10k run and had enough in the tank to maintain his lead all the way to the finish line.
